It’s a well-known fact that investing in a solar panel is the sustainable choice that gives you a free source of electricity, but how do they actually work?
Solar cells (also known as photovoltaic or ‘PV’ cells), convert the suns energy into electricity by allowing photons (particles of light) to knock electrons free from atoms which are then attracted to the electrical field in a solar cell.
These electrons are then pulled into an electrical current towards the metal in the solar panel and this is how the electricity is created. The more solar cells in a solar panel then the more energy can be created.

Which solar panels do I need?
Solar PV Panels
There are three types of 12v solar panel from Biard which all have different advantages depending on your requirements.
DIY Solar Panels - Fully waterproof, durable and suitable for all situations. Made up of around 36 - 40 solar cells and available in 80w, 100w or 150w. The panels benefit from an anodized aluminium frame which allow them to fixed to a wide range of flat surfaces. Take your pick of a slick colour frame available in white, black or silver.
Folding Solar Panels - Ideal for remote battery charging, festivals and camping, Folding Solar Panels are designed to be taken on the road. Consisting of two compact solar panels, they can be opened and closed thanks to their robust hinges.
The folding solar panel can be placed on the ground thanks to its stand which is built into the frame. Rain is also a non-issue as they are completely waterproof.
A waterproof solar charge controller is included and cables are built in, with fitted crocodile clips to connect direct a battery.
Flexible Solar Panels – Perfect for fitting onto curved surfaces by bolting on using the pre-drilled holes. Also waterproof, our flexible solar panels can even be walked across with soft-sole shoes making them perfect for marine use.

Available in white, silver or black, each mounting bracket has various advantages dependant on your requirements -
Corner Brackets – Used to secure a panel at all edges, corner brackets are ideal for stationary locations such as sheds or caravans.
Side Brackets - The most versatile mounting bracket, these can be fitted onto the long side of the panel to provide additional security when using corner or end brackets. Please note we would always recommend using side mounts with corner or end brackets on a moving vehicle.
Spoiler Brackets - Strong winds can attempt to lift the panel whilst the motorhome/boat is moving, but our solar panel end brackets are designed to protect the solar panel and prevent any added friction caused during journeys.
Adjustable Solar Mounts - Ideal for static installations with flat roofs such as sheds and buildings. Adjustable Solar Mounts allow the solar panel to be tilted between 0 and 30 degrees for maximum sun exposure
Once you’ve decided which solar panels best suit your requirements, you’ll need to know which accessories you’re going to need in order to complete the kit –
Waterproof Cable Entry – This allows the solar panel cables to be passed through the roof of the installation, providing a watertight seal when used alongside adhesives.
Adhesive Bonding Agents – An integral part of a solar panel installation, adhesive bonding agents fix your solar panel in place and create a watertight seal. We recommend using the Sikaflex adhesive range, as this has been rigorously tested with our Biard solar panels to confirm they securely fasten to withstand strong wind forces.
Extension Cables – These are used between our solar panels and the battery and/or charge control unit to ensure you can fix the panels in your desired area.

Kilowatt peak. The unit of measurement for the maximum amount of power your solar system can generate. On an overcast day, your system will produce less electricity than its peak power.
Monocrystalline silicon cells
The most efficient and expensive PV cell. Cut from single crystals of silicon, this system can harness around 15% of the sun's energy that shines on it.
Multicrystalline silicon cells
PV system made from silicon cut into wafers. It's slightly less efficient than monocrystalline cells, but also slightly cheaper.
PV cells are thin layers of semi-conducting material (usually silicon). Electrical charges are generated when the silicon is exposed to light, which can be conducted away as direct current. Multiple cells are connected together (usually behind glass) to form a panel.
Water is pumped through the solar panel and heated. This heated water flows through a heat exchanger, warming the water stored in your hot water cylinder. These systems typically use antifreeze.
Solar tiles use the same technology as photovoltaic cells, but are smaller and narrower than PV panels and look like roof tiles.

Water is pumped through a solar panel and heated by solar energy. The heated water then flows through a heat exchanger, warming the water in your hot water cylinder.
